Wood Devil is an American Double IPA brewed by 603 Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

Pours a cloudy marigold with a tall stack of dense, off-white foam that recedes slowly. Small patches of residue gather at the collar of the glass.

Aroma is bright and hoppy with a sweet scent of tropical fruit and pine.

Palate rides the other direction with biting citrus flavors of grapefruit and lemon; ramping towards a grassy, dank finish. A taste of pepper and sage linger on the tongue. A high ABV of 9.2% asserts itself in the back end with a warming sensation of alcohol.

The feel is pretty smooth with a medium body and less-than-moderate carbonation.

The Wood Devil Double IPA does have some nice qualities, and at 101 IBUs, it does bring a hefty hoppy bite; however, that bitterness comes off a bit medicinal on the back end and its heavy-handed use of booze burns the back of the throat.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
