West Coast-Style DIPA, an American Double IPA by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Boneyard Beer

West Coast-Style DIPA is an American Double IPA that’s collaboratively brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Boneyard Beer. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

Appearance

The DIPA pours a semi-translucent marigold with a tall stack of white foam that shows excellent retention. Dots of residue and a soapy collar cling to the glass while the head recedes.

Aroma

The delightful aroma blends hoppy notes of tropical fruit, citrus, and pine.

Flavor

Hops are the hero for this beer but the palate adds balance from a quintet of malts. They impart a light amount of sweetness before the taste ramps towards a tropical fruit combo of pineapple and mango. They’re washed away quickly by a juicy bite of grapefruit, followed by herbal hops, and resin. A high ABV is masked generally well. Though a slight warming does appear in the finish.

Mouthfeel

Slick mouthfeel has a medium body and ample carbonation.

Overall

The West Coast-Style DIPA features an excellent presentation, aroma, taste, and feel. Together they add up to a wonderfully made beer. Part of the Beer Camp Across the World, this brew isn’t particularly revealing, but it does highlight some of the best attributes of a west-coast style IPA.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
