Up River, an American Pale Ale by Central 28 Beer Company

Up River is an American Pale Ale brewed by Central 28 Beer Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a shaker pint glass from a can.

Appearance

The Pale pours a cloudy burnt orange and is topped by a thick cap of rocky off-white foam that shows good retention. A smattering of lace clings to the sides and a soapy collar rounds the glass.

Aroma

The aroma wafts tropical fruit with hints of caramel and pine.

Flavor

Bready malt and a touch of pine shift to a hoppy bite of grapefruit and lemon. The bitterness lingers through the finish, adding herb and resin.

Mouthfeel

Crisp feel has a body medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly.

Overall

Up River packs a lot of bite for a Pale. In fact, hopheads will be pleased by this brew as its bitterness rivals that of an IPA. But there’s a nice backbone for balance. ABV runs high for the style but its impact is negligible. Lots of hops. Lots of malt. Lots of alcohol. This brew could be considered an IPA lite.

About the American Pale Ale

The American Pale Ale is a hop-forward brew that has less alcohol strength, is less bitter and is more approachable than the American IPA. Its clean and balanced palate makes use of New World or American hop varietals. Prior to the explosion of the American IPA, the American Pale Ale was the most popular craft beer style in the United States.
