Tangier IPA is a Session IPA brewed by Southern Tier Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

The IPA pours a mostly-cloudy golden yellow and is topped by a thick cap of loose, rocky white foam that shows poor retention. The head’s quick reduction leaves behind gobs of sticky lace along the sides of the glass.

The aroma has a pleasant scent of ripe stone fruit and grain.

The palate is hop-forward with a squeeze of citrus mixed with biscuit. The tasting transitions to a mildly stronger bite of grapefruit and mellows out with sweet tangerine, coated with honey.

Its light body is crisp and dry with moderate carbonation.

Being light and dry this Session IPA is easily quaffed. Where many beers of this style skimp on any backbone, this brew strikes a good balance with its complement of sweet and bitter fruit. Lackluster appearance aside, the Tangier IPA is a pretty nice brew.

Recommended Pairings

Southern Tier Brewing Co. recommends the following food pairings with their Tangier IPA: soft cheeses, mild cheddar, burgers, grilled foods, spicy dishes, shortbreads, cakes, and fruit tarts.

About the Session IPA

The Session IPA is sub-style of the American IPA and received an official designation in 2010 in response to the growing trend of hoppier, low alcohol beers being brewed. This IPA retains the high bitterness of the standard IPA but has lower alcohol levels to make the brew “sessionable”. Even so, its strength can approach moderate levels. The Session IPA is less balanced than the American Pale Ale with higher attenuation and greater astringency.
