Sweet Potato Casserole is a Fruit Beer brewed by Funky Buddha Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, was served in a Teku glass from a bottle.
The beer pours a mostly-clear caramel brown color that’s capped by a thick head of cream-colored foam. The head shows fine retention and leaves a soapy collar following the reduction.
The aroma is sweet and spicy with a scent of vanilla, spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and backed by toasty bread.
The palate follows the nose, consisting of flavors that are sweet and spicy. Begins with a taste of sweet potato and a crusty bread. A suggestion of bitterness follows in the middle but its mild floral note is complementary at best. Sugary vanilla then appears with spices of cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. Finishes somewhat dry with a hint of warming alcohol and a lingering sweetness of caramel and toffee that sticks to the roof of the mouth.
The feel is smooth and creamy with a medium-full body and low carbonation. Suits this particular beer well.
This is really a dessert beer and its sweetness can become cloying. That being said, when considering the concept of a Sweet Potato Casserole, Funky Buddha nails it.
