Sweet Baby Jesus, an American Porter by DuClaw Brewing Company

Sweet Baby Jesus is an American Porter brewed by DuClaw Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a mug from a bottle.

Appearance

The ale pours an opaque black and is topped by a thin, cream-colored head that reduces slowly. Tiny dots of lacing are left behind.

Aroma

The aroma is pleasant with a scent of peanuts, chocolate, and coffee.

Flavor

The palate follows the nose and is led by bitter coffee and backed by a mild taste of peanut butter and chocolate. The finish is a touch boozy.

Mouthfeel

The feel has a smooth draw with a medium-full body and low carbonation. Its finish is dry and warm from the alcohol.

Overall

The aroma is the real star of this brew as it’s really enticing. Unfortunately, its palate doesn’t quite rise to meet those lofty expectations. Sweet Baby Jesus is an adequate representation of the style.

About the American Porter

The American Porter is a malty dark brew whose palate is complex and flavorful dark malts and varying hops. Historically, it’s an aggressive variant of the English Porter and Pre-Prohibition American Porters. It’s more assertive than an American Brown Ale but not as strong or bitter as the American Stout.
