St. Bernardus Tripel is a Belgian Tripel brewed by Brouwerij St. Bernardus NV, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a bottle.


The Tripel pours a cloudy golden hue with ample sediment in suspension. It’s topped by an inch-thick cap of puffy white foam that recedes slowly and leaves behind sticky lace along the sides of the glass. Fine bubbles continuously rise and gather just beneath the head.


The aroma mixes fruity esters and spicy phenols with bready malt.


The tasting is sweet with banana and some stone fruit. It’s countered by spicy phenols and a mild taste of alcohol.


Its feel is sharp with high carbonation and a medium body.


Doesn’t present as clearly as some Tripels but that’s nitpicking. The aroma is pleasant and typical of the style. The palate is nicely balanced between the fruit, spices, and malt. Also, a relatively high ABV is well hidden. The St. Bernardus is an all-around well-made Tripel.

About the Tripel

The Belgian Tripel originated at the Trappist monastery Westmalle. Its color ranges from deep gold to copper with good clarity and effervescence. Its feel should be around medium with high carbonation and high attenuation for a seemingly dry finish. Though high in alcohol, the booze should be masked well. Its palate and aroma are spicy, fruity, with a well-rounded malt character and moderate bitterness. Comparatively, the Tripel is darker and fuller than the Belgian Strong Pale Ale with more pronounced phenols than esters. And it’s not as strong or full as the Belgian Strong Dark Ale or Quadrupel.
