Special Interests is an American IPA brewed in the New England style by Civil Society Brewing Co. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

The IPA pours an opaque yellow-ochre and is topped by an inch-thick cap of loose and bubbly off-white froth. The head shows fair retention and reduces to a ring of soapy foam.

The aroma is delightfully sweet with a scent of stone fruit.

The palate begins with a taste of doughy bread that sharpens with a hoppy bite of grapefruit and lemon citrus. There’s pine to a lesser extent and the tasting mellows sweetly with a juicy squeeze of tropical and stone fruit.

Its feel is buttery smooth with a moderate body and carbonation. Finishes dryly with a less-than-moderate astringency and there’s also a slight warmth.

Its head retention is short-lived but that doesn’t really matter with this style of beer. Its aroma is enticing and persistent. Its feel is spot on and that palate is a delicious blend of hoppy goodness and juicy fruit. Special Interests is a special kind of brew.

About the American IPA

The American IPA is the most popular craft beer style in the United States. And for good reason, too. When well crafted, its hoppy goodness delivers intense aromas and flavors that can be citrusy and fruity; floral and piney; earthy and herbal. The hops are complemented by a wide range of malts and other ingredients. It’s a popular playground for brewers to express their creativity and a veritable cornucopia for craft beer connoisseurs.
