Soul Style IPA is an American IPA brewed by Green Flash Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a bottle.

The IPA pours a relatively clear golden orange hue and is topped by an inch-thick cap of loose soapy white foam that offers modest retention. Following the reduction, a few tiny droplets of residue cling to the sides and bubbly collar rounds the glass.

The aroma is faint but wafts a scent of tropical fruit and floral hops.

The palate begins with a taste of lightly toasted bread mixed with a hint of stone fruit. A sharp bite follows with a taste that’s grassy and citrusy with lemon peel and grapefruit pith that lingers through the finish. The bitterness is undercut slightly by sweet notes of mango, and pineapple. An earthiness also appears in the base as the beer warms.

Its feel has a smooth draw with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes dry and astringent.

Its appearance is adequate and its aroma is faint but pleasant. The palate has a lofty IBU count that exceeds the range of the style but should please the hopheads. However, the brew certainly could benefit from better balance. Its bitter palate is clean, its feel seems lighter than it is and combine that with a dry finish—this beer is pretty easy to drink. All in all, the Soul Style IPA is a solid brew but certainly not wowing.

About the American IPA

The American IPA is the most popular craft beer style in the United States. And for good reason, too. When well crafted, its hoppy goodness delivers intense aromas and flavors that can be citrusy and fruity; floral and piney; earthy and herbal. The hops are complemented by a wide range of malts and other ingredients. It’s a popular playground for brewers to express their creativity and a veritable cornucopia for craft beer connoisseurs.
