Short Sleeve Saison, a Belgian-style Saison brewed by Brewery Ommegang, and for the purposes of this review, the ale was served in a tulip glass from a bottle.

Pours a cloudy straw capped by an inch-thick cap of white foam that recedes slowly and leaves a soapy ring. A steady stream of bubbles rises in the glass.

Aroma is predominantly yeasty; a little earthy funk that’s brightened with lemon and coriander.

A light palate of cracker wheat and honey is spiced with coriander and pepper. Taste is balanced with mild, grassy hops and finishes dryly with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Bubbly mouthfeel has a light body with above average carbonation.

The Short Sleeve Saison is a straightforward representation of the style whose subdued palate tastes great. So easy to tilt back. Perfect for warm, sunny days.

About the Saison

Also known as a Farmhouse Ale, the Belgian Saison originated as a rustic ale provided for farmhands in French-speaking Wallonia. The modern Saison by Dupont was produced in the 1920s. Its mouthfeel is dry and ranges from light to medium with high carbonation. Typically golden in color, the style can also appear amber or brown. Its palate is either bittered or soured with citrus fruit flavors, earthy or spicy hops, and possibly spiced. Darker versions may be a little sweeter. Regardless of the variation, the Saison yeast character is an absolute must.
