Santastique, a Belgian-style Witbier by To Øl

Santastique is a Belgian-style Witbier brewed by To Øl, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a wheat beer glass from a can.

Appearance

The ale pours a crystal-clear gold and is topped by a thick cap of dense white foam that shows excellent retention. A smattering of lace is left behind and effervescence streams in the glass.

Aroma

The aroma is pleasant and is initially yeasty but as the beer loses its chill, the ale takes on a scent of orange peel and coriander.

Flavor

The palate begins with a taste of herbal hops and wheat bread. Bright orange citrus follows with an undercurrent of honey. Finishes with a bite of peppery hops, a squeeze of lemon, and spices of coriander and cardamom.

Mouthfeel

The feel is smooth and creamy with a medium body and a little higher than moderate carbonation. Finishes dry and pithy.

Overall

This Witbier shows too much clarity and its feel could use a bit more carbonation. And if being technical, the spices have a bit too much prominence on the palate. But considering its concept of a Christmas theme, that can be set aside. All things considered, Santastique is a really tasty brew, and one worth enjoying this holiday season.

About the Witbier

The Belgian Witbier dates back four centuries and all but vanished by the 1950s. The style was revived at Hoegaarden and its popularity has grown during the modern craft beer movement. The wheat ale ranges in color from pale straw to gold and has moderate alcohol strength. Its feel is dry and slightly creamy with a medium-light to medium body. Effervescent from high carbonation. Light bready malt with little to no hop bitterness. Bright orange citrus flavor typically spiced with coriander.
