Sakitumi, an American Double IPA by Lagunitas Brewing Company

Sakitumi is an American Double IPA brewed by Lagunitas Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a bottle.

The IPA pours a crystal-clear golden yellow and is topped by a generous stack of puffy white foam that shows good retention. The reduction doesn’t leave behind any lace or residue.

The aroma is faint with a hoppy scent of oranges and a hint of yeast.

Mild hops lead off and are quickly swallowed by sweet flavors of bready malt and rice. The tasting finishes with a mild bite of orange and pine; backed by a vinous note from the sake yeast and a note booze.

The feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly and a touch warm.

Part of the Lagunitas One-Hitter series, the Sakitumi is certainly unique. The appearance, aroma, and mouthfeel aren’t out of the ordinary. But let’s talk about the palate.

Its flavor is predominantly malty and runs on the sweet side. For a Double IPA, the presence of hops seems like an afterthought. Could use more bite from the hops or allow the booze to counter that sweetness.

Sakitumi is still an enjoyable drinking experience, and if you’re looking for something unique, give it a try. Feels and tastes rather light. Easy to drink and that 9% ABV is well-hidden.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
