American Pale Ale Modern Times Beer

Oneida, an American Pale Ale by Modern Times Beer

Oneida is an American Pale Ale brewed by Modern Times Beer, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a shaker pint glass from a can.

The ale pours a cloudy straw and is topped by a thick cap of puffy white foam that persists briefly. Gobs of lace and residue coat the sides of the glass while fine sediment collects at the bottom.

The aroma is faint but pleasant with a scent of floral hops. A hint of grain can be picked up in the nose as well.

Tasting begins softly with a flavor of pale malt and gently rises to a hoppy bite of white grapefruit, lemon, and pine. A touch of pepper and a flash of pineapple round out the palate. A base of doughy white bread ties the palate together.

Its medium-light body is slight for the style but suits the palate well. Smooth draw and a soft texture of medium-light carbonation are easily quaffed. Finishes somewhat dryly.

Oneida is a refreshing easy-drinker that has a nice hop bite and a malty backbone to keep the palate in balance. It could probably use a little more carbonation and hopheads will likely say it doesn’t have enough bite. And if that’s the case, go with one of those Session IPAs that are immensely popular. But Oneida is one of those beers you’ll be thinking about on a hot afternoon.

About the American Pale Ale

The American Pale Ale is a hop-forward brew that has less alcohol strength, is less bitter and is more approachable than the American IPA. Its clean and balanced palate makes use of New World or American hop varietals. Prior to the explosion of the American IPA, the American Pale Ale was the most popular craft beer style in the United States.
