Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is a Russian-style Imperial Stout brewed by North Coast Brewing Co. And for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a bottle.

Appearance

This stout pours an opaque black and is topped by a thick head of tan foam that reduces slowly. A soapy ring of residue clings to the sides of the glass while the head slowly recedes.

Aroma

Aroma is sweet at the start with molasses and chocolate. As the beer warms, roast malt takes over. backed by a hint of booze.

Flavor

The palate follows the nose, beginning with sugary molasses and chocolate. Balance succeeds thereafter with flavors of licorice, espresso, earthy woods, herbal hops, and a touch of warming alcohol. Finishes sweetly with more chocolate.

Mouthfeel

The feel is smooth and creamy with a full body and low carbonation.

Overall

The Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is darn near syrupy, but that being said, I couldn’t wait to take another sip. Overall, it’s a rich and complex brew that doesn’t disappoint. It’s certainly deserving of the numerous accolades it’s received over the years.

About the Russian Imperial Stout

The Russian Imperial Stout style is inspired by the brewers of the 19th century who crafted this King of Stout to impress the Russian Czar. The stout is strong in alcohol with a hefty malt backbone that exhibits a lot of character. The malt is roasted and even burnt with chocolate. Palate sometimes suggests dark fruit. Its hop bitterness can vary widely from none to balanced and even highly aggressive. Its feel is often dry with low to moderate carbonation.
