Mixed Media, a Fruit Beer by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Mixed Media is a Fruit Beer brewed by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a bottle.

What You Need To Know

The concept behind Mixed Media is that 49% of its fermented sugars comes from white grape musts. The remainder of the beer is essentially a Saison. With that mind, here’s the craft beer review.

Appearance

The ale pours a crystal-clear pale gold and is topped by a finger-thick cap of bubbly white froth that dissipates almost immediately. The reduction doesn’t leave behind any lace or residue. A few bubbles are observed rising in the glass.

Aroma

The aroma is predominantly yeasty funky that imparts a musty smell. There are also hints of grain and sweet melon in the background.

Flavor

The palate begins with a taste of cracker malt that transitions to a sweet and tart fruit mix of white grape and apple flavors. Black pepper spices the finish that’s mellowed with sweet melon.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is crisp and dry with a medium body and fizzy with high carbonation. Its tart finish has a moderate puckering acidic bite even while its sweetness is coating.

Overall

Its appearance is appropriate for the concept as its clear pale hue is akin to a white wine. The aroma isn’t as vinous as one might expect nor is it anything special. Regardless, it fades away by mid-session. The palate’s sweet and tart flavors mesh beautifully and its taste really grows on you. Combined with that dry and puckering feel, and you’ll keep going back for more. Mixed Media produces mixed results, but it mostly turns out pretty well. This side project is definitely worth a try.
