American Double IPA Lagunitas Brewing Company

Maximus Ale, an American Double IPA by Lagunitas Brewing Company

Maximus Ale is an American Double IPA brewed by Lagunitas Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a shaker pint glass from a bottle.

The ale pours a crystal-clear copper and is topped by an inch-thick, off-white head that recedes slowly. The reduction leaves behind a lovely lattice of sticky lace.

Bright aroma of citrus, hop resin, and a touch of pepper.

The palate offers a hoppy bite of grapefruit that crests atop a bready malt base. Finishes with a taste of alcohol, spiced with pepper, and an underlying caramel sweetness.

Its feel is crisp with a medium body and moderate carbonation.

The Maximus Ale is a big beer that’s so flavorful. And in spite of a high ABV, it’s just so crushable. Lots to like about this one.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
