Maple Scotch is a Scottish Ale brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip glass from a bottle.

The Scotch Ale pours a dark amber with a finger-thick head of off-white foam that holds firm for a moment and then reduces to a smattering of lace.

A sugary scent of maple and toffee wafts the nose from the moment the cap is popped.

The palate begins just as sweetly with syrup and malty bread before finishing with a hint of roast and chocolate.

The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with low carbonation. Although its gravity and alcohol suggest Wee Heavy, its body is more akin to one of the lighter styles.

Although the Maple Scotch could use more heft to its mouthfeel, its sweet flavors and bready malt combine for an easy drinking and fairly satisfying brew.

Recommended Pairings

Sierra Nevada recommends the following food pairings with their Maple Scotch Scottish Ale: roast ham with maple glaze, goat cheese gnocchi in brown butter sauce, chili-rubbed roasted root vegetables, aged Gouda cheese; sweets of maple lemon cookies and maple walnut cake.

About the Scottish Ale

Scottish Ales (also known as Scotch Ales) are often enjoyed during the winter. Their flavors are rich and malty with sweet notes of caramel and toffee.

Historically, the Scottish Ale encompasses the four sub-styles Scottish Light, Scottish Heavy, Scottish Export, and Wee Heavy. Their names were indicative of the beer’s gravity and its expected cost for a barrel of beer.
