Lupu-Luau is an American IPA brewed by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, was served in an IPA glass from bottle.
Pours mostly cloudy with the color of marigold. An aggressive pour yields the best head—a towering cap of billowy white foam that lingers only briefly. A generous lattice of sticky lace clings to the glass as the head of reduces. Effervescence is apparent in the glass as a steady stream of bubbles continuously rise.
Aroma is purely tropical with a pleasant scent of pineapple and mango. As the beer warms, toasted coconut and a hint of alcohol appear.
Palate begins a touch malty with the taste of overly-toasted bread before cresting to a mildly-hopped floral bite. Coconut then appears, delivering a lingering creamy sweetness, slightly undercut by hop oil.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with medium body and moderate carbonation.
The flavors of Lupu-Luau really come together as the beer warms and in spite of its relatively high ABV, this IPA is quite easy to drink. Though it might be too sweet for some, lovers of a coconut beer should definitely give it a try.
