Lucille is an American Imperial Stout brewed by Terrapin Beer Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a bottle.

The stout pours black and is topped by an inch-thick head of brown foam that reduces slowly. A smattering of sticky lace clings to the glass.

The aroma is savory with a scent of hickory and smoke.

The palate is decadent with syrupy molasses, chocolate, and a touch of vanilla; balanced to a lesser extent by an earthy roast from a trio of woods and mild chili pepper.

Its feel is rich and smooth with low carbonation and a full body.

Lucille tastes a tad sweet with little hops presence, and not quite enough roast. Although it’s not mind-blowing, this Imperial Stout is still an enjoyable brew.

About the American Imperial Stout

Rich, dark, and complex, the American Imperial Stout has a strength similar to that of an American Barleywine. Its bitterness typically runs high from hops, roast, or booze, and it should have a silky, luscious feel. The style originated in the Russian Imperial Court, became popular in England, and then all but disappeared. The modern craft brewing renaissance resurrected the style in America and in England.
