Imperial Tanilla is an American Porter brewed by Knee Deep Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a can.

The Porter pours an opaque black with no light showing through. It’s topped by an inch-thick cap of dense tan-colored foam that shows fine retention. Patches of residue coat the sides of the glass following the reduction.

The aroma wafts the nose with a smoky roast malt. It’s backed by a hint of booze.

A taste of coffee and bready malt leads the palate. The finish is bittered with a mild dose of floral hops, earthy woods, and smoky char. Sweet notes of vanilla and dark chocolate appear on the swallow.

Its feel has a light grain with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly with a slight warming sensation.

Its appearance is solid and the aroma is simple but pleasant. The aroma is simple but pleasant. The palate is robust and flavorful. This brew packs a lot of booze but it’s masked fairly well. Imperial Tanilla is an all-around fine Porter.

About the American Porter

The American Porter is a malty dark brew whose palate is complex and flavorful dark malts and varying hops. Historically, it’s an aggressive variant of the English Porter and Pre-Prohibition American Porters. It’s more assertive than an American Brown Ale but not as strong or bitter as the American Stout.
