Huki Idol, an American Double IPA by Funky Buddha Brewery

Huki Idol is an American Double IPA brewed by Funky Buddha Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a bottle.

The IPA pours a hazy yellow ochre and is capped by a generous stack of puffy off-white foam that shows good retention. The head’s reduction leaves behind patches of residue on the glass. A frothy layer of soapy bubbles tops the ale.

The aroma consists of tropical fruit as a scent of pineapple and mango sweetly wafts the nose.

Hop-forward palate begins with a citrus bite of lime and grapefruit atop a base of doughy bread. Mellow tropical fruit flavors of pineapple and orange occupy the middle. Lightly bitter and tangy flavors of lime and passion fruit linger through the finish. A bright note of fresh mint is picked up on the swallow.

Its feel is smooth with a body that’s a shade over medium and moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly and slightly acidic.

Its appearance and feel are fine. The aroma doesn’t last long but is pleasant. But it’s that juicy palate that’s the star of this brew. And Huki Idol is just that. Oh so juicy. Wouldn’t have guessed that this brew has a 75 IBU count. It’s that well balanced. And that little hint of mint on the backend is terrific.

Feels lighter than it is while being slightly dry and tart really makes this a refreshing brew. The Huki Idol is a good beer to enjoy on a sunny day but be careful. A relatively high ABV is masked well and that alcohol can be sneaky.

Recommended Pairings

Funky Buddha recommends the following food pairings with their Huki Ido American Double IPA: Pupu platter, tuna poke bowl, SPAM rolls, and rum cake.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
