Hotbox Coffee Porter is an American Porter brewed by Oskar Blues Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a shaker pint glass from a can.
The ale pours an opaque black with nearly an inch-thick cap of tan foam that shows fine retention. No lace or residue remains during the reduction.
Not surprising, the aroma offers a pleasant scent of coffee roast with just hint of vanilla.
The palate begins with a taste of brown bread mixed with raisin. A mild coffee roast flavor follows with a mild bitterness from floral hops. There’s a touch of earthiness from a light taste of black lemon tea. Finishes with a sticky sweetness of chocolate and a touch of vanilla.
The feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation.
Considering its name and concept, the Hotbox Coffee Porter is somewhat light on coffee. Instead, the taste more closely resembles a straightforward American porter. Which isn’t a bad thing but those expecting a heavy dose of coffee may come away disappointed. Otherwise, this brew smells wonderful; its palate has a nice balance. The feel is spot on. This is a solid representation of the style.
