Hopslam Ale, an American Double IPA by Bell’s Brewery, Inc.

Hopslam Ale is an American Double IPA brewed by Bell’s Brewery, Inc., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a can.

Appearance

The ale pours a clear copper and is topped by a thick cap of dense white foam that shows good retention. Gobs of lace cling to the sides of the glass while the head slowly reduces.

Aroma

The aroma is bright with a fresh floral scent of pine and a hint of citrus. The aromatics add booze and stone fruits as the beer warms.

Flavor

Hops are front and center, beginning with a mild floral and citrus bite. That bitterness is quickly swallowed by a fruity malt backbone and sweetened further with honey. Hops return with a leafy and earthy bite and followed by a burn of booze that lingers through the finish.

Mouthfeel

The feel is relatively smooth with a body that’s a shade over medium and less-than-moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly with a very warming sensation.

Overall

This Double IPA makes use of six different hop varietals but their bitterness takes a backseat to its malty backbone and intense booze. But that isn’t a bad thing as the Hopslam Ale is oh-so-flavorful. Sure, the alcohol runs a little hot, but otherwise, this is one hell of a beer.

Recommended Pairings

Bell’s recommends the following food pairings with their Hopslam Ale: macaroni and cheese, sharp cheddar, strong bleu cheese, grilled walleye, grilled asparagus, roasted parsnips, pesto; lavender and goat cheese risotto; sweets of oranges, baklava, and pink lady apples.

Fired Up for Hopslam

Here’s a video of Bell’s Director of Operations, John Mallet, talk about the hoppiness of the Hopslam and the fervent love of its fans.

And also check out these videos where John discusses why Hopslam is brewed once a year, why it’s canned, and also whether or not one should consider cellaring the Hopslam.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
