American Double IPA Sixpoint Brewery

Hi-Res, an American Double IPA by Sixpoint Brewery

Hi-Res is an American Double IPA brewed by Sixpoint Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

The IPA pours a hazy burnt orange and is topped by a thick stack of loose, rocky off-white foam. The head shows fair retention and leaves behind a few tiny patches of sticky lace on the glass.

The aroma is fragrant with a scent of fresh pine needles and stone fruit. A hint of booze also wafts the nose as the beer warms.

Toasted bread blends with a light citrus on the draw. The mid-palate wallows in buttered biscuit and is followed by a juicy bite of grapefruit. The finish is heated with booze-drenched peaches mixed with resin and spicy hops.

Its feel is smooth with a medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly with a warming sensation from the alcohol.

Hi-Res is quite an intense offering from Sixpoint. Its IBU count is bombastic but a hefty malt backbone keeps its bitterness in check. In fact, it’s the booze and fruity sweet malt you’ll taste most. The hops are nicely complementary. Sixpoint refers to this brew as a Triple IPA but perhaps it should just be reclassified as a Strong Ale. Regardless, this is a thoroughly enjoyable beer.

About the American Double IPA

Also known as an Imperial IPA, the American Double IPA is a stronger and higher hopped version of the American IPA. The style originated in the 1990s when craft breweries wanted to provide a more intense offering to hopheads. The DIPA has more hop bitterness than Strong Ales and Barleywines but has less alcohol.
