Goose Island Winter Ale is an American Brown Ale brewed by Goose Island Beer Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.

The ale pours a clear burnt umber and is topped by a finger-thick cap of dense tan foam that vanishes almost immediately. Lace is absent and only a thin ring of residue gathers at the collar.

The aroma is pleasant with a scent of caramel with hints of pine, chocolate, and baked brown bread.

A mild hopping of toasty malt leads the palate and then promptly vacates to leave faint notes of nut and chocolate. A punch of caramel is scrubbed by a mild bite of peppery hops. A touch of tea and chocolate round out the finish.

The feel is grainy with a body that’s a shade under medium and a little over moderate carbonation. Finishes dryly.

The Goose Island Winter Ale is an adequate but imperfect brown ale. Its appearance is somewhat lacking and its feel is thin. And though the aroma is nice, its palate is underwhelming. This is one of those brews you can still enjoy while being keenly aware that you could’ve had a better beer.

About the American Brown Ale

The American Brown Ale is similar to the English Brown Ale but has greater alcohol strength and more hops. But it’s still a malty brew with flavors of chocolate, caramel, and nut. The darker malt is more robust than an Amber but doesn’t reach the level of a Porter.
