Ginger Snap is an American Brown Ale brewed by Due South Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a can.

The ale pours a very dark brown with auburn highlights and is topped by a thick head of dense tan colored foam that offers modest retention. A few droplets of residue and a thin collar remain following the reduction.

The aroma is quite pleasant with a welcoming scent of ginger and cinnamon.

The palate begins with a mild taste of toffee and bread and turns spicy with heavy ginger and cinnamon. A balance of dark fruit sweetens the base and is followed by a taste of herbal hops. A relatively high ABV doesn’t impact the aroma or taste.

The feel is nice with a relatively smooth medium body and moderate carbonation. The combination of ginger, cinnamon, and alcohol give the brew a bit of heat. Finishes dryly.

Ginger Snap substitutes typical brown ale flavors with its spices and the result is somewhat jarring. The ginger flavor is powerful and permeates the entire palate. Malts and hops do their thing and barely keep it in check. Lovers of spicy brews will likely appreciate this one.

About the American Brown Ale

The American Brown Ale is similar to the English Brown Ale but has greater alcohol strength and more hops. But it’s still a malty brew with flavors of chocolate, caramel, and nut. The darker malt is more robust than an Amber but doesn’t reach the level of a Porter.
