Gallo is a Pale Lager brewed by Cervecería Centro Americana, S.A., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the lager was served in a dimpled mug from a bottle.

The lager pours a crystal-clear brassy gold with and is topped by an inch-thick pad of white foam that shows modest retention. A few droplets of residue cling to the glass.

The aroma is slight with a scent of grain.

The palate begins with a taste of corn and gently crests towards a soft bite of floral hops. The brew finishes sweetly with a taste of corn.

The feel is crisp and smooth with a medium-light body and moderate carbonation.

On a warm day at Lake Atitlán or in the steamy jungle of Tikal, Gallo really slakes your thirst. Otherwise, this mass-produced pale lager is a one dimensional, malty bore.

The Beer of Guatemala

Even if its quality doesn’t make it deserving, Gallo is the standard bearer of Guatemalan brews. It’s very much the Budweiser of American beers. Its bottles can be found in any store and on draft at every restaurant. Its marketing is omnipresent with its brand seemingly plastered everywhere. So, unless the craft beer scene ever takes off in Guatemala, there’s no escaping this brew.

A Beer by Any Other Name

Gallo is also available in the United States under the name Famosa.
