Fresh Drops, an American IPA by Civil Society Brewing Co.

Fresh Drops is an American IPA brewed in the New England style by Civil Society Brewing Co. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

Appearance

The IPA pours a murky yellow ochre and is topped by an inch-thick cap of loose soapy white foam. The head shows modest retention and leaves behind a collar of bubbly froth. A smattering of lace clings to the glass.

Aroma

The aroma is dank with resin, sweet with overripe stone fruit, and backed with grain.

Flavor

Doughy bread mixes with resin and bitters with lemon juice and white grapefruit. The bitterness is mellowed with a sweet undercurrent of peach and pineapple.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is relatively smooth. A light grain gradually gains texture on the backend. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes somewhat dry.

Overall

Fresh Drops is a variant of Civil Society’s flagship IPA, Fresh. A key difference between the two is that this brew substitutes Lemondrop hops for Columbus.

The appearance of this brew isn’t quite as impressive as Fresh. And while this is just personal preference, but the juicy tropical fruit flavors of Fresh are just better than the tart lemon and resin found in Fresh Drops. That being said, this brew is still quite good.

About the American IPA

The American IPA is the most popular craft beer style in the United States. And for good reason, too. When well crafted, its hoppy goodness delivers intense aromas and flavors that can be citrusy and fruity; floral and piney; earthy and herbal.
