Fort Point, an American Pale Ale (in the New England Style) by Trillium Brewing Company

Fort Point is an American Pale Ale brewed in the New England style by Trillium Brewing Company. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a can.

Pours murky and opaque with a color akin to white grapefruit juice. An aggressive pour yields the best head but regardless, its persistence will be brief. At least some nice lace sticks to the glass.

The aroma is bright and fragrant with a scent of pine and citrus.

Where Fort Point really shines is in its palate that’s nothing short of spectacular. Columbus and Citra hops provide delightful flavors of juicy pineapple, peach, and mango. A quartet of malts balances the palate nicely. The finish is dry and bittersweet with the taste of fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. This brew offers so much hoppy flavor without the bite of an IPA.

Mouthfeel has a medium body with ample carbonation that really comes alive on the tongue.

Representing the New England style, the Fort Point’s hazy appearance is spot on. Its aroma is pleasant, the mouthfeel is lovely, but it’s the flavor that will win you over. If you’ve yet to try a beer from Trillium, make this one your first.

About the American Pale Ale

The American Pale Ale is a hop-forward brew that has less alcohol strength, is less bitter and is more approachable than the American IPA. Its clean and balanced palate makes use of New World or American hop varietals. Prior to the explosion of the American IPA, the American Pale Ale was the most popular craft beer style in the United States.
