Emerald Showers, an American IPA by Civil Society Brewing Co.

Emerald Showers is an American IPA (in the New England IPA style) brewed by Civil Society Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

Appearance

Appearance is consistent with a New England IPA as it pours a super hazy, a golden ocher color with an inch-thick cap of soapy, off-white froth that offers modest retention. Lively carbonation is apparent with bubbles rising in the glass. A few droplets of residue cling to the glass.

Aroma

Aroma is bright and pleasant with a scent that’s predominantly piney but tropical fruit asserts itself as the beer warms.

Flavor

Taste begins with a touch of malt and then is abruptly shoved aside with an aggressive hopping that blasts the palate with biting citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon. Mellows briefly with a touch of tropical fruit. Notes of piney and herbal hops linger.

Mouthfeel

Mouthfeel has a medium body with ample carbonation that comes alive on the tongue.

Overall

Perhaps it’s not Civil Society’s best work, but it’s damn good. Hopheads will enjoy the bite but fans of the haze-craze IPAs may think it lacks the dank or juice. Regardless, Emerald Showers is a really wonderful beer, and one worth trying when visiting the brewery.
