Dunkle Weisse is a German-style Dunkelweizen collaboratively brewed by American icon Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and German giant Privatbrauerei Ayinger. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a wheat beer glass.
The Dunkelweizen pours a cloudy chestnut brown capped by an inch-thick head of cream-colored foam that recedes slowly.
The aroma is balanced with a pleasant scent of clove and hefeweizen yeast.
Fruity esters provide a lovely taste of semisweet banana, spiced with clove. A mild bitterness appears in the back end that is nicely complementary. The palate meshes well atop a malty base of caramel and brown bread.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes lightly on the tongue.
Dunkle Weisse is a faithful representation of a Dunkelweizen. It’s part of the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across the World collection, and while this brew isn’t as unique as some, it is one tasty brew.
