Double Brown Throwdown Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Brown Ale is an American Brown Ale brewed by Rogue Ales. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.

The ale pours mahogany and bleeds into a tawny brown at the edges. Its topped by a finger-thick head of khaki foam that offers modest retention.

A sugary aroma is pleasant enough with chocolate and molasses; backed by a hint of whiskey.

A rich and malty sweetness dominates a palate that follows its nose. Cola nut follows before finishing with a lingering, earthy bitterness flushed with booze.

The feel is smooth with a full body and low carbonation.

The Double Brown Throwdown is initially too sweet but the taste improves as the beer warms when the alcohol-infused wood comes alive. That being said, this is neither the best amongst browns or barrel-aged brews.

About the American Brown Ale

The American Brown Ale is similar to the English Brown Ale but has greater alcohol strength and more hops. But it’s still a malty brew with flavors of chocolate, caramel, and nut. The darker malt is more robust than an Amber but doesn’t reach the level of a Porter.
