Coconut Hiwa is an American Porter brewed by Maui Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a can.

Pours a cola brown with a finger thick of bubbly tan foam that offers modest retention. Effervescence is visible and a few droplets of residue cling to the glass.

The aroma offers semisweet dark chocolate combined with a hint of coconut.

Dark chocolate highlights the palate grounded by roast malt that delivers an earthy, coffee flavor. Surprisingly, coconut takes a back seat in this brew. Absent at first, it does appear more in the finish as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel has a medium body and moderate carbonation.

Considering its name, the porter’s use of coconut is surprisingly light. That’s likely to disappoint some who were hoping to enjoy a coconut beer. Otherwise, the Coconut Hiwa is an enjoyable, straightforward representation of the style.

About the American Porter

The American Porter is a malty dark brew whose palate is complex and flavorful dark malts and varying hops. Historically, it’s an aggressive variant of the English Porter and Pre-Prohibition American Porters. It’s more assertive than an American Brown Ale but not as strong or bitter as the American Stout.
