Citra Hopped Live Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale brewed by Southern Tier Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a can.

The Pale pours a slightly hazy straw and is topped by a thick cap of fluffy white foam that shows modest retention. Gobs of sticky lace cling to the sides of the glass.

The aroma is a hoppy mix of pine and citrus.

Cracker malt and hints of tropical fruit lead the palate. Lemon and lime citrus is followed by a mild bite of peppery hops. Its bitterness is sweetly mellowed by tropical fruit.

The feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation.

The Citra Hopped Live Pale Ale is light, refreshing, and wonderfully balanced. Its palate is nicely hopped without being overpowering.

Recommended Pairings

Southern Tier recommends the following food pairings with their Citra Hopped Live Pale Ale: cheddar or derby cheeses; steaks or hamburgers, and bread pudding.

About the American Pale Ale

The American Pale Ale is a hop-forward brew that has less alcohol strength, is less bitter and is more approachable than the American IPA. Its clean and balanced palate makes use of New World or American hop varietals. Prior to the explosion of the American IPA, the American Pale Ale was the most popular craft beer style in the United States.
