Centennial IPA is an American IPA brewed by Founders Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a bottle.

The IPA pours a hazy burnt orange that’s topped by a half-inch pad of white foam that lingers for quite some time. Its reduction leaves behind gobs of sticky lacing.

Centennial hops are the hero for this brew and its aroma is fragrant with a scent of floral hops.

The palate begins and ends with sweet and toasty caramel malt. A big hoppy bite of citrus rises up in the middle and finishes with a taste of pine cresting atop the aforementioned malt.

Mouthfeel has a body slightly heavier than medium body with moderate carbonation.

The Centennial IPA is superbly balanced but has a substantial hop character that’s more than enough to please finicky hopheads. Its taste truly offers something for everyone. A real winner.

Rejection to Inspiration

Many years ago, the brewmaster at Founders offered their original IPA to a friend who turned it down, preferring a hoppy brew he was accustomed to drinking. Miffed, the brewmaster crafted a new recipe with an amped hop profile that was certain to please discriminating hopheads. The Centennial IPA was born.

About the American IPA

The American IPA is the most popular craft beer style in the United States. And for good reason, too. When well crafted, its hoppy goodness delivers intense aromas and flavors that can be citrusy and fruity; floral and piney; earthy and herbal. The hops are complemented by a wide range of malts and other ingredients. It’s a popular playground for brewers to express their creativity and a veritable cornucopia for craft beer connoisseurs.
