Califa IPA is an American-style IPA brewed by Cervezas Califa, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a shaker pint glass from a bottle.
The ale pours a cloudy burnt orange and is topped by an inch-thick cap of frothy off-white foam that shows modest retention. Ample effervescence is visible in the glass.
Its aroma has a pleasant scent of grassy and floral hops.
The palate begins with a soft taste bready malt that shifts to a hoppy bite of herbal hops, a light lemon citrus, and then mellows with a flash of caramel.
Its feel has a smooth draw with a body that’s just under medium and carbonation that’s a shade over moderate. Finishes slightly dry and astringent.
The Califa IPA has a lovely hop flavor that’s balanced nice malt backbone. Its feel is a wee thin and its carbonation is a little sharp. But these misgivings are slight and this is otherwise a fine representation of an American IPA. Back in the States, this brew may not garner much attention. But in this part of the world, the Califa IPA is a welcome beer to happen upon.
