Blackberry Daze IPA, an American IPA by Anchor Brewing

Blackberry Daze IPA is an American IPA brewed by Anchor Brewing, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a bottle.

The ale pours a cloudy, pinkish copper and is topped by a finger-thick cap of bubbly white foam that shows remarkable retention. Streaks of residue drop to a soapy collar during the reduction. Ample effervescence is visible in the glass.

The aroma is predominantly hoppy with a pleasant scent that’s piney and floral. There is a hint of berry fruit in the background that grows stronger as the beer warms.

The palate begins with flavors of cracker malt and sweet berry fruit. Taste turns bitter from there with a punch of floral and citrus hops. Finishes with a lingering bite of lemon peel, black tea, and tart blackberry.

The mouthfeel is almost spritzy with its medium body and a shade over medium carbonation. Finishes dryly.

The Blackberry Daze IPA has a vinous quality that doesn’t quite align with the rest of the palate. And though it is refreshing and easy to drink, it’s not on par with the numerous quality American IPAs available on the market.

About the American IPA

The American IPA is the most popular craft beer style in the United States. And for good reason, too. When well crafted, its hoppy goodness delivers intense aromas and flavors that can be citrusy and fruity; floral and piney; earthy and herbal. The hops are complemented by a wide range of malts and other ingredients. It’s a popular playground for brewers to express their creativity and a veritable cornucopia for craft beer connoisseurs.
