Black IPA is an American Black Ale brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a bottle.

The ale pours an opaque black and capped by a tan head that persists briefly and leaves only a spittle of lace.

The aroma is a fragrant scent of pine and citrus hops.

The palate is hop-forward with a biting taste of grapefruit and lemon that dominate over a smoky mix of roasted malt and dark chocolate.

The mouthfeel meets expectations with a medium body and moderate carbonation.

The label describes the brew as being a “dark hoppy ale” but the hops overpower the palate such that the brew is only dark in color. While this is another solid offering from Sierra Nevada, its taste could benefit from a stronger malt presence.

About the American Black Ale

The American Black Ale may also be referred to as a Black IPA or a Cascadian Dark Ale, and the ales of this style range in color from dark brown to pitch black. Its palate features malty notes of light to moderate roast and are often very hoppy from a liberal use of American hops. Its alcohol can range from average to high depending on whether or not the brewery is crafting a “Double” or “Imperial” version. Historically, this is a relatively new style. Depending on whom you speak with the style either originated in the late nineties or after the start of the new millennium.
