Bell’s Porter is an American Porter brewed by Bell’s Brewery, Inc., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, this ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.
The porter pours nearly black with ruby highlights and topped by an inch-thick cap of creamy, tan-colored foam that shows fine retention. A soapy collar is left behind following the reduction.
Out of the bottle, the aroma has a sweet scent of cocoa powder but coffee roast asserts itself as the beer warms.
Dark fruit starts the tasting followed by a gentle bite of floral and lemon hops. Finishes with a delicious blend of sweet dark chocolate roasted with coffee. Those flavors linger lovingly on the back of the tongue.
The feel is just right with a smooth and creamy medium body and moderate carbonation.
Bell’s Porter might just be a straightforward American Porter but it’s wonderfully executed. Every attribute is crafted superbly in what is an all-around solid representation of the style.
The brewery recommends the following food pairings with this porter: smoked gouda and bleu cheeses; barbecued meats, sausages, chili rubbed steaks and salmon. Sweets of coconut, peanut butter, chocolate or vanilla bean ice cream.
