Above The Clouds, a Belgian-style Saison by 3 Stars Brewing Company

Above The Clouds is a Belgian-style Saison brewed by 3 Stars Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip glass from a can.

The Saison pours a cloudy yellow gold and is topped by a finger-thick cap of loose, soapy foam that shows fair retention. Bits and pieces of sediment are observed swirling in the glass.

The aroma is very faint and nearly indiscernible. Hints of grain and yeast are detected.

Its palate begins with a mild taste of sourdough bread that transitions to a soft bite of hoppy citrus, spiced with pepper, and rounding out with mellow fruity esters.

Its feel is crisp with a dry finish. Medium body and nearly high carbonation.

Its appearance fails to inspire and its aroma is barely noticeable. The palate is nice with its blend of hops, spices, and esters. And a peppy feel keeps it moving. Above The Clouds may only be a satisfactory Saison, but it’s still an enjoyable brew.

About the Saison

Also known as a Farmhouse Ale, the Belgian Saison originated as a rustic ale provided for farmhands in French-speaking Wallonia. The modern Saison by Dupont was produced in the 1920s. Its mouthfeel is dry and ranges from light to medium with high carbonation. Typically golden in color, the style can also appear amber or brown. Its palate is either bittered or soured with citrus fruit flavors, earthy or spicy hops, and possibly spiced. Darker versions may be a little sweeter. Regardless of the variation, the Saison yeast character is an absolute must.
